Student leaders from the five Ateneos all over the country will converge in Ateneo de Zamboanga University on October 27-31 for the 26th Buklod Atenista Leaders’ Summit. This year’s chosen theme is “Vamos!: Students’ Political Engagement Towards 2010 and Beyond.”
The highlight event for the 26th Buklod Atenista is a national forum dubbed as “Philippine Leaders Forum in the South”. The forum, which will focus on the Mindanao region, will be participated by declared or perceived aspiring candidates for the presidential elections in 2010. In addition, “Ateneo PolEd Caravan”, an intensive political education campaign, will be conducted in several barangays in the city.
Other activities prepared by the El Consejo Atenista, ADZU’s student government and host of this year’s summit, include sessions on various topics such as the state of the nation, the 2010 elections, the youth’s major role, and political education. There will also be a series of workshops and group discussions which will be handled by carefully selected established leaders, socio-political program officers, among others.
“I hope that Buklod Atenista would successfully serve its main purpose, which is to be an avenue for student-leaders to get acquainted and share with each other personal ideas, beliefs, and experiences about leadership, service, and development,” says Mark Jason Harun, Chair and Project Head. “I am also hoping that Buklod will be effective in trying to fuel the participants’ desire to actively engage in politics, undeniably an inevitable and the most influential aspect in nation-building,” Harun adds.
Buklod Atenista is the alliance of student councils from the five Ateneos in the country. The member councils are the Sanggunian ng mga Mag-aaral ng mga Paaralang Loyola of Ateneo de Manila University, Supreme Student Government of Ateneo de Naga University, SAMAHAN Central Board of Ateneo de Davao University, Central Student Government of Xavier University—Ateneo de Cagayan, and El Consejo Atenista of Ateneo de Zamboanga University. The annual summit’s main objective is to enhance the leadership skills of the delegates through the exchange of ideas and strategies for effective and meaningful service for the Ateneo studentry.
