LIBRARY INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM

RATIONALE

The Library Program aims to provide the basic knowledge and skills needed in acquiring rich information through the use of library resources and facilities.

In response to the constantly shifting needs of the learners and the emerging thrust of the school in today’s information age, the library instruction program will also provide varied opportunities and meaningful learning experiences to students to enhance their reading skills, thus making them conscious readers and critical thinkers.

STUDENT ACTIVITY PROGRAM

Introduction:

When the child enters school, he is expected to be formed socially, mentally, spiritually and physically. He is exposed not only to an academic environment but to a new environment that considerably influences his growth in personhood. He mingles with other children of his own age and begins to learn that school is one experience that all children go through. He begins to develop his personal identity as he acts, reacts and interacts with the different activities of the school. Considering that the child spends more time in school than at home, the school has a greater responsibility of structuring its program of activities to provide for the total growth and formation of the students in all aspects. Hence, a more developed student activity program is organized.

Rationale/Objectives:

The Student Activity Program of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University Grade School is designed to complement the curricular offerings of the school. It provides opportunities for the students to develop their talents, skills and leadership while at the same time stimulates their initiative, creativity, responsibility, cooperation and social awareness. It encourages the expression of the students special talents in the arts, athletics, journalism and other fields. It also provides the students with opportunities for learning in informal settings and addresses some of their spiritual, moral, intellectual, emotional and social needs. Hence, it contributes to the total development and formation of every student.

General Organization:

The activities of the Student Activity Program of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University Grade School are open to students from Preparatory to Grade Six. The clubs are organized in July and activities are undertaken soon after the organizational meeting. A moderator is assigned to the club for which he/she is most equipped with the necessary background and skills to assist in the development of the student in a particular field. He/She is given a choice which club to moderate thus tapping his/her expertise at the same time providing outlets for the expression of his/her talents.

There are twenty-nine existing interest clubs and organizations in the Ateneo Grade School. Twenty one of them are held on Friday and eight on other days. Clubs held on Friday clubs are taken cared of by moderators as part of their regular loads. Moderator of clubs held on other days are aptly compensated with a monthly honorarium.

The preparatory pupils have an exclusive club organized for them by their moderators.

For Grades One, Two and Three pupils, the class moderators consult with the students to assist them to make the right choice of the club, based on the student’s interest, talents and potentials. For pupils in the upper grades, the selection is made by the pupils themselves. After having made a choice they report to their club moderators for membership.

The regular meetings of the Friday clubs are held from 1:30 – 2:30 pm. Club moderators, together with the members of the club, plan their activities and submit their lined-up activities to the Office of the Assistant Principal. All clubs are being supervised by the different subject area chairpersons.

For activities that are to take place outside of the school campus, a written permission from the Principal is required. Students are required to submit a parent’s approval before joining the said activity. Generally, no membership fee is collected from the students in any club by the Ateneo. However, this does not apply with clubs that are affiliated with an outside entity that requires a registration fee for membership. Students who are members of school clubs other than those with affiliation outside, finance their own activity.

Evaluation:

A year-end evaluation of the clubs’ activities is conducted to determine the effectiveness, strengths and weaknesses and to check over-all attainment of goals and objectives of the Grade School Student Activity Program (see attached evaluation instrument).

SOCIAL ACTION PROGRAM

RATIONALE

The Ateneo de Zamboanga University Grade School aims for the total formation of each pupil. The educational programs thrust is the development of the physical, intellectual, social, moral and spiritual formation of each individual.

The Ateneo spirit soars with Ignatian ideals and principles. This community of dedicated men and women in one way or another keeps the covenant of services as top priority in its list of concerns. This community is committed to academic excellence and undying preferential love for the poor and genuine witness to justice in the service of the faith for the greater glory of God and Country – PRO DEO ET PATRIA.

The very core of social action work centers on service and concern for the poor, which is congruent with the objective of this institution. It aims to reach out to people in need. It stresses the significance of internalizing values learned. All these are hoped to be achieved through the following objectives:

LEADERSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM

RATIONALE

The famous world leader, Marshall Tedch, said this about leadership: “There are natural gifts in a man of a genius, in a born general, in the average man, such advantages may be secured by work.”

In the ultimate sense, leadership is not inherent. It depends upon the traits which can be developed and upon the application of techniques which can be learned. Although some men are born learners, most leaders are good leaders because they have been trained and have been worked hard to become so.

The Ateneo de Zamboanga University Grade School Leadership Training Program was organized to provide the necessary activities and training to cultivate and practice students who possess the mental and physical ability and the moral and ethical integrity expected of a genuine leader.

Through this leadership training, it is hoped that students will imbibe a sense of mission, self-denial, high character, job competence, good judgment, and commitment to each other for the greater good of all.

ATENEO DE ZAMBOANGA PROGRAM FOR ADVANCED STUDENTS (ADZPFAST)

RATIONALE

The Ateneo de Zamboanga University Grade School employs a heterogeneous system of sectioning its students. In all levels and in all sections, there are top students – top 5 or 6 who are advanced or above all the rest in the group in the particular subject area. These generally are “self-starters” or well-motivated students who can do so much work on their own or as part of a group with minimal direction or guidance from a teacher.

In the light of Jesuit precept, Cura Personalis Alumnorum (personal care for alumnae) the Ateneo de Zamboanga Program for advanced students (ADZPFAST) is deemed to take care of this urgent concern. Through this program, these advanced students are provided with opportunities and challenges to do their best, get the work beyond their own capabilities to expand their skills and horizons and to give them the chance to achieve excellence to be of greater service to others.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY

The Ateneo de Zamboanga Grade School is a Jesuit School Ignatian in spirit, this community of men and women for others is committed to provide personal care for its students toward academic excellence, a preferential (though not exclusive) love for the poor, and the witnessing to justice in the service of the faith for the greater glory of God and country – – Pro Deo Et Patria

The ADZPFAST, a program for the advanced students in the Ateneo de Zamboanga University Grade School is an integral part of this commitment. The program is designed to challenge the advanced students in English, Science and Mathematics through a multidimensional teaching approach involving special curricula, the enrichment and acceleration of course contents.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROGRAM

The ADZPFAST is a special program that is purposive in nature. It is designed to supplement, enrich or accelerate the course contents of the regular Science, Math and English curricula. It is meant to take care of the top or advanced students in grade V and VI classes specifically in Science, Math and English. This program is directly under the supervision of the department chairs of the three subject areas.

SPECIAL READING PROGRAM

INTRODUCTION

In 1980, the Ateneo de Zamboanga University Grade School reading teachers, through the assistance of the Ateneo de Manila University grade school reading experts, developed a reading program that catered to the entire Ateneo de Zamboanga University Grade School population. This program was the Regular Reading Program (RRP) which included the following components: objectives, contents, activities, materials or resources, time and evaluation.

The reading teachers informally evaluate the RRP through the students’ performance in the program by means of a pre-test and a posttest. The students performance in the classroom is also monitored. A progress report is written based on the teachers observation and experiences of implementation. Revision of the program is done when needed to better serve the students.

For many years, the RRP of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University Grade School was believed to have developmentally taken cared of the diverse reading needs of the students in all the different levels. It has satisfactorily answered and met the needs of the changing Ateneo de Zamboanga University Grade School clientele.

RATIONALE

The Ateneo de Zamboanga Grade School students population has grown significantly these past years. The reading heterogeneity of the students in the different levels has risen. To carefully take care of the slow readers from grades 1 to 6, the Special Reading Program (SRP) was developed. This was done to give special attention and more time to the reading problems of some students.

ACADEMIC JUMBLE

RATIONALE:

In the pursuit of academic excellence, the Academic Jumble, an academic contest was started in the Ateneo de Zamboanga Univeristy Grade School twenty years ago. There was a need to organize an activity such as this to tap the intellectual capabilities of students who belong to the upper 10% of the class in all the grade levels (Senior Preparatory to Grade VI).

This activity hopes to sharpen the academic competence of the students in four specific areas: English, Math, Science and Sibika. In this type of contest, the students are provided the opportunities to manifest their best in the areas mentioned. It does not only sharpen their minds but it also encourages them to face and accept challenges of life, to humbly accept defeat as well as triumph and to compete in a friendly manner. It likewise enhances development of positive attitudes toward work and study.

In line with our school goals, this contest cultivates academic strengths of students in specified areas, thus preparing them to be productive and of greater service to the community and to the nation as a whole. Hence, the Academic Jumble encourages the development to the fullest of the children who form part of our nation’s leadership bank and who are tomorrow’s nation builders.

ENGLISH/FILIPINO ELOCUTION PROGRAM

RATIONALE

The Ateneo de Zamboanga University Grade School, as a Jesuit School envisions to develop well-rounded boys and girls equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge and habits. They are to attain excellence in curricular, co-curricular, and extra curricular fields.

The program aims to develop and maintain excellence, particularly in oral language “eloquentia perfecta” which is the distinctive mark of an Atenean. It is therefore, for this reason that the elocution programs in English and Filipino is a must in all the levels in the Ateneo Grade School. Through the English/Filipino Elocution program students are trained to be eloquent or to be good speakers.

SPEECH CHOIR PROGRAM/CHORAL RECITATION PROGRAM

INTRODUCTION

In the Ratio Studiorum of the Jesuits (Jesuit Plan of Studies) of 1599, Eloquentia Sapientia and Eloquentia Perfecta were among the humanistic aims of Jesuit Education. The Ateneo de Zamboanga University Grade School, as a Jesuit school, strives to develop in the students the ability to express or verbalize their thoughts and feelings for the service of the society where they live in.

In fulfillment of the provision of the Ratio of the Jesuits, the institution provides its students the necessary exposure and training to sharpen their minds and their oral communication to attain eloquence of speech. The elocution program, for many years, has been the answer to the quest for eloquence of speech. Indeed, the goal for which this program was primarily conceived served only about 15 to 20 percent of the student populace.

RATIONALE

How does the school intend to take care of the 80 percent of its population? Some students are extremely shy. Some have not mastered enough confidence to stand and much more to recite before a large audience. Some of them have stage fright. A good number of them just need a break. They can comfortably recite together with their classmates for a start and eventually recite all by themselves.
