SACSI conducts
Alternative Semester Break Immersion Program

The
Ateneo de Zamboanga University’s Social Awareness and Community Service
Involvement (SACSI) office organized an Alternative Semesteral Break Immersion
Program entitled as “Moments of Service” on October 20 – 25, 2014.

For this year, Curriculum Based
Service-Learning Program
was introduced as a medium of the said program
for their volunteers to enhance their expertise based on the course they are
taking. This is in partnership with the Zamboanga-Basilan Integrated
Development Alliance (ZABIDA) under the supervision of Program Officer Ms.
Raquel A. Salvacion.

The office program was able to deploy five volunteers under Mindanao Youth
Development (MyDev) program for the Out of School Youth or (OSY) – Alyssa Mendoza, Carl Julius D. Tan, Honey Lee
Resurreccion, John Joshua N.Suelan
and Fhairan Joshua M. Wee. They were able to implement Drug Awareness
programs and Leadership Training sessions to different barangays and even had a
Peace Camp on October 24 to 26, 2014 that catered to out of school youth from
the different communities and organizations in the city.

On the other
hand, four volunteers were assigned to AkayKalinga Center that provides a home
for street children. The volunteers are Kayell
Anne Rose D. Lim, Myles Singson, Dan Ryan S. Reyes
and Mary Antonette C. Salazar who were
able to give tutorial sessions and alternative recreational activities to the
children. The volunteers also conducted Street Education which is one of
AkayKalinga’s program that caters to the educational needs of street children
through informal education.

At the end of the week long immersion, the volunteers were
asked to identify issues and challenges in the areas that they were assigned to
and make plans based on their course of expertise that will address the needs
of their assigned community for the sustainability of the program.
