JHS’ Jalani and Lidar 2’s Samson Bag Research Awards

Two of Ateneo de Zamboanga University’s faculty and staff won the top awards during the Regional Research Conference held August 30-31, 2016 at the Carlos Dominguez Conference Hall, Salvador campus, La Purisima, Ateneo de Zamboanga University.

Jeffrey Jalani of Junior High School and Ralph Rainier Samson of Phil-LIDAR 2 were awarded Best Presenter for Parallel sessions and Best Presenter for Research Poster, respectively. Best poster award went to Louie S. Jalapadan of Saint Joseph College of Sindangan.

Jalani reported on findings of his research on the Attitudes and Practices of Local People toward Conservation and Ecotourism Development in Great Sta Cruz Island, Zamboanga City, while Samson, with support from Felix Quibo-Quibo Jr and Geoffrey Fabian, also from Phil-LIDAR 2, presented his poster on the Evaluation of 3 Types of Building Shapefiles namely Extracted from Envi, LAS Tools and Hybrid of the Two. Jalapadan’s winning poster was on “Needs Assessment: English for General Academic Purposes of First Year College Students in Saint Joseph College of Sindangan Incorporated”.

The conference, spearheaded by the Ateneo Research Center under the directorship of Dr Teresita Montano, was attended by some 50 participants and presenters composed of researchers, faculty and administrators from higher education institutions in the Zamboanga Peninsula. It served as the venue for ADZU faculty members and those from other colleges and universities in Region 9 to share their research findings to fellow members of the academe and the general public.

Overall, three plenary sessions, 13 oral presentations in four parallel sessions and seven poster presentations made up this year’s regional conference, covering areas in the arts, culture, ecotourism and marine resource utilization, economics, education, history, science and information technology and spirituality.

Other ADZU faculty who presented their studies or poster abstracts during the conference include, from the Higher Education Unit: Dr Robert Panaguiton, Dean of the School of Liberal Arts; Cindy Ann Quaile, Ma Christina Canoñes, Arlene Perla Ledesma, Director of the Ateneo Peace Institute, and Sandra Jamiro; from Phil-LIDAR 2: Felix Jusay III, Elona Jane Mariz Lerios, Iric Fredmore Midel, Chrazel Dice Magpayo, Ahmed Baldomero, Jan Edward Sousa, Dominic Rey Acuña, and Rovelin Enriquez, Jr; and Espridion Atilano, Jr., from Junior High School.
