As we celebrate National Teachers’ Month 2024, we proudly highlight Ma. Ella F. Fabella, a remarkable educator whose work has become a beacon of hope for the Sama-Bajau community in Zamboanga City. Her tireless dedication to the Indigenous People’s Education (IPEd) Program, along with her pioneering initiatives such as Project B.E.A.R. (Bajau Educational Activities and Recreation) and the Pantawid Tutorial Reading Program, has opened the doors of learning for hundreds of Sama-Bajau children, nurturing their potential and transforming their futures. Ma’am Fabella embodies the spirit of service, emphasizing inclusion, empowerment, and the preservation of culture. By translating educational materials into the Sama-Bajau language and integrating indigenous knowledge into the curriculum, she ensures that her students remain connected to their heritage while receiving a quality education.
Her commitment goes beyond academics; she nurtured a supportive environment where every child feels valued and included, advocating for the rights and recognition of marginalized communities. Recognized as a 2024 Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipino awardee, Ma’am Fabella’s impact extends beyond the classroom, showcasing how education can give hope, uplift lives, and build a brighter future for all. Her work not only touches her students but resonates throughout the entire community, inspiring others to invest in the power of education. An interview highlighting her accomplishments and insights was conducted on September 26, 2024, with the assistance of the University Communications Office.
Recently, a courtesy visit took place on October 7, 2024, during which Ma’am Fabella met with University President Fr. Guillrey Anthony “Ernald” Andal, SJ, expressing her gratitude to Ateneo for the values instilled in her during her ten years of teaching at the institution. We also took this opportunity to convey our sincere appreciation for her steadfast dedication to her students and the community, acknowledging her as a genuine advocate for education.
By sharing Ma’am Ella’s story, we not only honor her achievements but also pay tribute to the tireless efforts of educators across the nation, celebrating their unwavering commitment to learning and growth in their communities. Through her story and those of many others, we are reminded of the vital role teachers play in shaping the future and the importance of supporting their invaluable work.
