Better World, Better Teachers Training for Zamboanga, Basilan, and Sulu

The Better World, Better Teachers training brought together a diverse group of educators, partners, and advocates from across Zamboanga, Basilan, and Sulu for an impactful two-day event. Held at the Grand Astoria Hotel on November 15–16, 2024, this training was designed to equip teachers with practical, evidence-based strategies to enhance both literacy and numeracy skills in their classrooms. Through this initiative, we aim to empower educators to create inclusive, growth-focused environments that allow every student to reach their full potential.

The first day of the training focused on literacy, with the goal of providing educators with the tools they need to support the foundational reading skills of their students. Participants were introduced to the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach, an evidence-based framework tailored to meet students where they are in their learning journey.

Key components of the day’s session included the TaRL Literacy Approach, Literacy Assessment, and Literacy Activities. These practical strategies gave educators the knowledge they need to strengthen their students’ reading abilities, creating an environment where every learner can thrive.

Educators from Amaloy Elementary School, Claret Samal Foundation Inc. Yellow School of Hope, Dungon Elementary School, Luuk Tongkil Elementary School, Bohe Suyak Elementary School, Simariki School for Indigenous People, as well as representatives from the SDO of Zamboanga City and the Ateneo de Zamboanga University’s School of Education, joined together for this transformative event. By the end of Day 1, participants were inspired and empowered with practical, innovative strategies to help their students succeed in literacy.

The second day of training focused on numeracy, equipping educators with strategies to build strong mathematical foundations for their students. Through the TaRL Numeracy Approach, teachers learned how to address the varying learning needs of their students, guiding them from basic number recognition to more complex mathematical concepts.

Participants engaged in TaRL Numeracy Activities, where they learned how to assess student progress and tailor their lessons to fill gaps in learning. The training emphasized creating an interactive classroom environment that creates the development of key numeracy skills while helping students build confidence in problem-solving.

By the end of Day 2, educators left with the knowledge and skills necessary to creating a lifelong love for learning and develop their students’ mathematical abilities. Ready to return to their schools in Zamboanga, Basilan, and Sulu, these teachers are prepared to create classrooms where every child can succeed and unlock their full potential.

The Better World, Better Teachers training has laid the foundation for positive change in classrooms across the region. By equipping teachers with practical tools and strategies, we are building a better world where quality education empowers every child to reach their full potential. Together, we are making a lasting impact—one classroom at a time.
