The Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU) will hold the Ateneo Special Awards Convocation tomorrow, December 4, 2019 at its Salvador Campus in La Purisima St, this city. The awards program is the University’s way of honoring groups and individuals for living inspiring lives and for serving as exemplars in their respective fields.
For this year, an archbishop, a musician, a volunteer service organization, and a volunteer worker will be the recipients of the awardees. This was announced by AdZU President Fr Karel San Juan, SJ recently.
With Dr Efren Y Wee, AdZU Chair of the Board of Trustees, Fr San Juan will confer the following awards: the Archbishop Luis V Del Rosario SJ, DD Recognition, named after a Jesuit who served Zamboanga as Bishop and Archbishop in the 30s to the 70s, is conferred on a man of the cloth who has shown great care for others in the religious, spiritual and/or social sphere of activity; the Fr Eduardo P Hontiveros, SJ Recognition for Culture and Arts, named after the Jesuit composer and musician best known for popular Philippine liturgical music who spent his regency at AdZU in the late 40s to early 50s teaching and serving as moderator of the Choir String Band, is bestowed on a person who has made significant contributions to the promotion of Culture and Arts; the Pro Deo et Patria (For God and Country) Award and a Special Citation, which are given to a group or individual who have shown outstanding and excellent service and generosity of life on behalf of others.
This year, the ARCHBISHOP LUIS V DEL ROSARIO, SJ DD RECOGNITION is awarded to the Most Reverend ROMULO DELA CRUZ, DD, Archbishop of Zamboanga, for his legacy of faithful service to God, his pastoral care for God’s people, and valiant effort to bring peace in conflict-prone communities. Archbishop de la Cruz served as parish priest in Tacurong, Sultan Kudarat; as seminary rector in Sharif Kabunsan in the former ARMM; and as Bishop in Basilan. He became Archbishop of Zamboanga in 2014.
The EDUARDO HONTIVEROS SJ RECOGNITION FOR CULTURE AND ARTS is conferred upon MR APOLONIO ENRIQUEZ, AdZU Bandmaster, for his dedication and hard work in transforming AdZU’s marching band into a renowned concert band, and for his talents which he generously shares in nurturing future musicians. Sir Poli is a pillar of Zamboanga City’s musical heritage whose talent was honed in the Ateneo marching band, the Angklung Rondalla; and as musical director of the Major Chords, whose Chavacano compositions became the benchmark of original Chavacano Music.
The PRO DEO ET PATRIA RECOGNITION is presented to the JESUIT VOLUNTEERS PHILIPPINES FOUNDATION INCORPORATED (JVPFI) for outstanding service and generosity though a life lived dedicated to God and country. The JVPFI is a lay organization founded in 1980, composed of fresh college graduates and young professionals sent to under-resourced communities to serve in social, pastoral, and development work. After their term, they continue the mission in their individual vocations and professions.
A Special Citation is awarded posthumously to MS GENIFER BUCKLY, JVP Batch 40, who tragically lost her life while serving as a volunteer this year. Gen is the eldest child of Pastor Wilfred and Elita Buckly. A scholar in college, Gen graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education, Major in Filipino in 2015. She taught at the AdZU Junior High School for four years and joined the JVP this year, assigned to Pangantucan Community High School in Bukidnon.
The special awards ceremony is one of the University’s activities lined up for the annual Ateneo Fiesta (AtFest) which kicked off last December 2, 2019, and will run til December 6, with the theme, Alegria.Amor.Amistad.
