Ateneo hosts fun-filled Stat Camp

Full-filled games such as tug-of war and a talent show made up some of the activities during the 9th Western Mindanao Statistics Camp hosted by the Ateneo de Zamboanga University held from January 27-29, 2017 at the AdZU Kreutz Campus in Tumaga, this city.

The three-day camp was organized by the Mathematics Department of the College of Science and Information Technology (CSIT). It opened with a series of “Getting to Know You” fun games to establish rapport among the 176 participants composed of Junior and Senior High school students from AdZU, Claret School of Zamboanga, Culianan National High School, Talisayan National High School, Zamboanga City High School-Main, and Marian College in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.

CSIT Dean Dr Rocheleo Mariano, who delivered the welcome address, said that the camp aims to promote statistical awareness and literacy through innovative ways. Contrary to public perception, statistics could actually be enjoyable but the teacher has to be creative in teaching the subject, Mariano said.

With the theme, “Sustainable Development: Making Statistics Count,” the stat camp also sought to create a pool of statistics enthusiasts responsive to the needs of the society, and to provide a venue for schools to establish linkages towards community development in Western Mindanao.

Other activities during the event included tent-making, a debate and quiz bowl for the student participants, and for the moderators, seminar-workshops relevant to teaching.

Camp Masters for this year’s event were Ralph Anthony Espos and Kreanne Falcasantos, faculty members of the AdZU’s CSIT Math Department.
