MEMO TO: THE ATENEO COMMUNITY
RE: APPEAL FOR TABANG SENDONG
Typhoon Sendong has caused destruction of unimaginable proportions to Northern Mindanao, particularly in Iligan City, Cagayan de Oro City and many other areas. The statistics of lives lost, homes and infrastructures destroyed, and of agricultural, economic and environmental catastrophes can at times obscure the face of the calamity. Hence, I will do away with statistical description of the extent of havoc in the wake of typhoon Sendong. Still, some areas continue to have no drinking water and electricity. Funeral parlors do not anymore embalm bodies because they cannot cope with the demands. There is need for drinking water, cooked and ready-to-eat food, clothes and other essential items in evacuation sites. We can collect these items but only until 21 December, Wednesday. Drop-off point will be in the Brebeuf gym.
Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan has launched its appeal for Tabang Sendong, a quick emergency relief intervention that seeks to address the immediate needs of thousands of victims, homeless, and starving people. To this end, I am convening this morning our AdZU Quick Response Team led by SACSI and explore possibilities how we can assist XU in its relief operation.
I invite our AdZU community, collectively and individually, to pray for the typhoon victims and reflect on the situation in Northern Mindanao and explore avenues of assistance. At the moment, it is preferable to collect monies and transmit these to XU as soon as possible.
I thank you for your support. Let us pray for the victims of typhoon Sendong.
