AdZU promotes peace thru CEAP Games

Using Sports as a way to promote Peace, Unity, Dialogue, and
healthy Collaboration among Mindanaons, the Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU)
hosted the 6th Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines
(CEAP) Mindanao Games, with the theme, “Towards 2021: New Spirit, New Fervor at
75!,” held from January 4-8, 2017, this city.

AdZU P.E. instructor Rommel Cuaresma, the CEAP Region IX Athletics
coordinator reported that more than 600 athletes, coaches and officials from five
(5) regions in Mindanao participated in the sports meet where athletes competed
in various sports and non-sports events.

From Region IX, the following schools participated in the games: AdZU, Claret School of Zamboanga City, Immaculate Conception
Archdiocesan School-Tetuan, Immaculate Conception Archdiocesan School de
Calarian, Pilar College, St. Joseph School, Saint Vincent’s College, Dipolog
City; Saint Estanislao Kostka College, Manukan, Zamboanga del Norte; Saint
Joseph School of Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte; and Saint Columbian College,
Pagadian City. Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro City was the sole
representative from Region X.

From Region XI: Davao City: Ateneo de Davao
University, Assumption College of Davao, John Paul II College of Davao, San
Pedro College of Davao, St. Peter College of Toril, St. Vincent High School of
Maragusan, and University of Immaculate Conception; St. Mary’s College of
Tagum, Tagum City; Davao del Norte: Marynoll High School Kapalong, Marynoll
High School Panabo, Marynoll High School of Santo Thomas; and Our Lady of
Fatima Academy, Davao del Sur.

From CARAGA: Fr. Saturnino Urios
University, Butuan City; St. Paul University of Surigao and St. Michael College
of CARAGA, Surigao City; and St. Theresa College Tandag, Surigao del Sur. Notre
Dame of Jolo College, Jolo, Sulu was the only delegation from ARMM.

The sports games
included Badminton, Basketball, Chess, Football, Futsal, Sepak Takraw, Swimming
(freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly, medley), Table Tennis,
Taekwondo, Volleyball, and Dancesport, now recognised by the International Olympic Committee as a sport (Latin & American Standard). Vocal Singing (Solo
& Duet) was the sole non-sport event in the meet.

The CEAP Mindanao Games
began in 2011 in Davao City as an exhibition game dubbed the CEAP Mindanao
Sportfest. The following year, the Mindanao-based sports activity became an
annual event. The long-term plan is to bring the CEAP Games to the national
level. Next year’s  7th
Mindanao Games will be hosted by Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro City.
