AdZU Junior High School celebrates 117th Philippine Independence Day
This year’s Independence Day celebration carries the theme “Kalayaan 2015: Tagumpay sa Pagbabagong Nasimulan, Abot-Kamay na ng Bayan” (Independence 2015: Triumphs Through Reforms, Within Nation’s Reach). This year’s theme prompts us to remember the sacrifices of our nation’s founding fathers and heroes.
The Ateneo de Zamboanga University-High School (AdZU-HS) through its Social Studies department commemorates the 117th Philippine Independence Day on June 11 with a flag raising activity. An interpretative performance of PUNLAAN-the official theatre guild of the AdZU-HS kicked off the celebration. The AdZU-HS students, faculty and staff were provided with a unique learning as well as an entertaining spectacle when members of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines and Girl Scouts of the Philippines Ateneo Chapter, marched amidst the audience each carrying a particular flag in the order of their historical evolution. Mr. Rovic John F. Eslao, faculty of the Social Studies department narrated the story and background of each flag as it ascended the stage.
The march concluded with the raising of the official Philippine flag with the Coro Concordia de Aguilas singing the national anthem. Mr. Robert Aldwin Fernandez of 9-St. Xavier, newly elected Council of Leaders President led the students in reaffirming their loyalty to the flag and love of country by the words of the Panunumpa sa Watawat and Panatang Makabayan. In closing, Fr. Stephen T. Abuan, SJ, High School Principal challenged the students to show their reverence and commitment to the Independence of the country in his inspirational message.
