Adzu hosts 9th Stat Camp

The Ateneo de
Zamboanga University hosted the 9th Western Mindanao Statistics Camp from
January 27-29, 2017 at the Kreutz Campus in Tumaga.

This year’s confab was themed as “Sustainable Development: Making Statistics
Count.” It aimed to promote statistical awareness and literacy through
innovative and enjoyable means; create a pool of statistics enthusiasts that
are responsive to the needs of the society; and provide a venue for schools to
establish linkages towards community development in Western Mindanao.

The three-day camp was
organized by the Mathematics Department of the College of Science and
Information Technology. It was participated by 176 Junior and Senior High
School students from Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Claret School of Zamboanga
City, Culianan National High School, Marian College-Ipil, Talisayan National
High School, and Zamboanga City High School-Main.

The event included
various activities for the participants and their moderators. Some of these
activities included group-strategy games, debate, quiz bowl, and a talent show.
The moderators on the other hand were given seminar-workshops that will be
useful to their teaching careers. The student participants were divided into 8
teams represented by the colors
Brown, Yellow, Orange, Pink, Green, Red, Blue,
and Violet respectively.

CSIT Dean Dr
Rocheleo Mariano welcomed the participants. The opening ceremony included
“Getting to Know You” activities and games designed to fast-track
friendship among the participants. Camp Masters for this year were Ralph
Anthony Espos and Kreanne Falcasantos, both faculty members of the CSIT Math
Department.

The Brown Team
emerged as the over-all champion. Awards and recognition were also given to
deserving campers during the closing ceremony held on the morning of January
29.
