It is my honor to present Reverend Father Guillrey Anthony Andal of the Society of Jesus, the fifth President of Ateneo de Zamboanga University. Fr Andal, who is also known as Fr Ernald, embodies the highest ideals of Jesuit education and leadership.

Fr Andal entered the Society of Jesus in 2003 and was ordained to the priesthood in 2014. His academic credentials are exemplary, reflecting a commitment to lifelong learning and scholarly excellence:
  • Doctor of Educational Leadership for Social Justice, Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, California, USA (2020)
  • Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry, Ateneo de Manila University (2015)
  • Bachelor of Sacred Theology, Loyola School of Theology (Summa Cum Laude, 2014)
  • Bachelor of Arts in Management Economics, Ateneo de Manila University (Cum Laude, 1998)

His doctoral dissertation, titled "Leading from the Margins: The Educational Leadership Experiences of Jesuit Directors of Mission Schools in the Philippines and the Implications for the Leadership Formation of Filipino Jesuits," demonstrates his profound interest in educational leadership within challenging contexts. This research contributes significantly to our understanding of leadership formation for Jesuit priests in the Philippines.

Fr Andal's professional experience spans various roles within the Jesuit educational system and beyond:
  • Assistant to the Academic Vice President, Ateneo de Davao University (2020-2022)
  • School Director, Saint Isidore High School (2014-2017)
  • Assistant Parish Priest, Our Lady, Mary Mediatrix of All Grace, Zamboangauita, Malaybalay City (2014-2017)
  • Executive Director, Jesuit Music Ministry (2011-2013)
  • Political Program Development Officer, Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan (2006-2007; 2010-2011)

Currently, Fr Andal's leadership extends to several prestigious institutions where he serves as a member of the Board of Trustees:
  • Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu
  • Ateneo de Naga University
  • Ateneo de Davao University
  • Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan De Oro
  • Xavier School, San Juan, Manila

In addition to his role as University President, Fr Andal holds key positions in educational associations:
  • President, Zamboanga Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi Association of Private Schools
  • Regional Trustee, Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (Region 9)
  • Regional Program Director, Private Education Assistance Committee (PEAC, Region 9)

Fr Andal's leadership philosophy is rooted in the Jesuit tradition of fostering inclusive communication and just leadership through Ignatian discernment. He is dedicated to continuing the Jesuit mission of providing quality education that forms persons-for-and-with-others, guided by Filipino, Catholic, and Jesuit values.

A native of Quezon City, Fr Andal is fluent in both Tagalog and Bisaya, the latter acquired during his assignments in Bukidnon. This linguistic versatility reflects his adaptability and deep connection to diverse Philippine communities.

Fr Andal is known for his genuine engagement with students and young people. He actively participates in dialogues ranging from contemporary culture to the ethical implications of artificial intelligence in education. His ability to connect theological reflections with everyday experiences of love and compassion demonstrates his commitment to holistic education.

As we welcome Fr Guillrey Anthony Andal, SJ, as the fifth President of Ateneo de Zamboanga University, we recognize a leader who embodies academic excellence, administrative acumen, and a profound understanding of the Jesuit educational mission. His visionary leadership promises to guide Ateneo de Zamboanga University toward new heights of academic distinction and social responsibility.
