CCES and Cartwheel Foundation collaborate for Angiskul ma Bangka Project to educate the Bajau Children

The Ateneo Center for Community Extension Services (CCES), in partnership with Cartwheel Foundation, launched the Angiskul ma Bangka project – an informal education project for Bajau children at the Masepla Transitory Site, Brgy. Mampang on October 16, 2014. A total of fifty-seven (57) children enrolled at the Angiskul ma Bangka. Present during the launching were Ms. Fedilita Dejumo, Camp Manager, Barangay Mampang Kagawad on Education Hon. Valentino Luciano, representatives from International Organization for Migration and Fifty-one Bajau parents/community leaders/ elders.

The program also aimed to orient the community and other stakeholders on the concept of the Angiskul ma Bangka project. By providing the Bajau children with relevant education, the project also aims to empower the Bajau to be self-sustaining thus their participation in the implementation is essential.

A series of activities such as 4Cs workshops, meetings, and planning were conducted with the community/Bajau parents prior the completion of Angiskul ma Bangka temporary learning center. The construction of the temporary center that will serve as classrooms was a collaborative effort between the organizers and the Bajau parents.

CFI Programs Officer Celia Jurado and Program Consultant Veronica Tarabi visited Zamboanga on August 23-24, for a whole-day meeting cum planning with CCES and visit to the Bajau parents at the Transitory site.

During the launching Dejumo expressed that “we are very grateful that the ADZU and Cartwheel provide an opportunity for the Bajau children to learn in a safe environment. The children will no longer be wandering around the site and be exposed to danger.” Mampang Barangay Kagawad on Education, Hon. Valentino Luciano told the children to “have fun and learn. Always remember that education is the most important thing that can never be taken away from you.”
