Ateneo
Research Center leads the ZPHERA 2nd General Assembly

The Ateneo Research Center (ARC) led in the organizing
and conduct of the Zamboanga Peninsula Higher Education Research Association
(ZPHERA) 2nd General Assembly. The assembly was held on March 5,
2013 at the Badjao Hall of the newly constructed 10-story annex building of the
Garden Orchid Hotel. More than 100 ZPHERA members coming from universities and
colleges in Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay,
Zamboanga City, Basilan, and Sulu attended the assembly.

Emmylou Yanga, EdD, Regional Director of the Commission
on Higher Education (CHED) Region 9 Office, was the plenary speaker in behalf
of Jean C. Tayag, PhD, Director IV of the Office of Policy, Planning, Research
and Information (OPPRI). Dr Yanga, discussed the challenges that faced ZPHERA
members and their institutions regarding research and development.

Gloria Florendo, PhD, professor at the Western Mindanao
State University and current chairperson of the Ethics Committee of the
Zamboanga Consortium for Health Research and Development (ZCHRD) spoke about
ethical considerations in research and emphasized the importance of ZPHERA
members to be increasingly conscious of ethical principles in the conceptualization
of studies involving human subjects as ethics review has become a requirement
prior to the conduct and publication of research.

Officials of ZPHERA, headed by its president Teresita G.
Montaño, PhD (ARC Director), helped clarify issues raised by ZPHERA members
during the open forum. ZPHERA is a CHED-recognized, SEC-registered organization
created to unify the efforts of ZAMPEN –based higher education institutions in
building and promoting the culture of research as well as to encourage greater
collaboration among faculty-researchers coming from the ZAMPEN area.
