September is Literacy Month

This year’s theme for the high school is “Literacy: The key to lasting peace and engaged citizenship.”
This Thursday, September 8, 2011 is International Literacy Day. As part of our literacy initiatives, the English Department intends to revive the “Drop Everything and Read” session (10:30AM to 11:00AM).
We invite all students, faculty and staff and all offices to join us this Thursday in a once-a-year reading activity for the high school community to spend 30 minutes of their time to read any books, magazine, newspaper or any reading material of their choice. The observance of literacy day is a great reminder to all of us that active reading can have a positive impact on literacy success in our school and in our community.
Other exciting events have also been lined up to celebrate Literacy Month in the high school. These include the On-the-Spot Essay Writing Contest, Dramatic Reading, Spelling Bee, Eng-Sci-Math Overnight Activity for ACE, MAGIS and SSC students, Reading Corner, Book Display, Character Day (Blast from the Past), Speech Finals and Book Donation Project.
This Literacy celebration is an opportunity to inculcate the value of literacy and books as the core of education and education as the core of creating a better world.
