The Psychology Department of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University under the leadership of its chair, Ms. Ailyn Sabdilon recently teamed up with the Ateneo Center for Organization Research (ACORD) and the Psychological Association of the Philippines (PAP) in an event dubbed A Seminar on Developing Effective Filipino Work Teams and a Forum on RA 10029 (Philippine Psychology Act of 2009. It was held at the university’s Carlos Domiguez Conference Hall on September 22, earlier this year.
With HR practitioners, administrators, supervisors, team leaders, office staff/personnel, teachers and graduate students of Psychology, from different schools and companies in the city and from nearby provinces serving as participants, the said event featured top-notch speakers that dissected the relevant details of the aforementioned topics.
Ms. Cristina A. Alfariz, an ACORD researcher who holds a business administration degree from UP-Diliman and a master’s from AdMU, shared her expertise on identifying various strategies that develop effective teams in organizations while relaying her experiences as one of the partners at Management Strategies involved in designing and leading leadership, team development, brand and culture change processes for clients in Philippines, Hongkong, Singapore, Malaysia, China and Brunei.
The seminar started off with the presentation of the research on Developing Effective Filipino Work Teams and after the theory-based presentation of Ms. Alfariz on team effectiveness, a representative from the City Human Resource Management Office also gave their best practices of team development.
This was then followed by a forum featuring Dr. Ma. Caridad H. Tarroja, a certified assessment and clinical psychologist, former PAP president and the Philippine representative in the ASEAN Regional Union of Psychological Societies (ARUPS). The De LaSalle University professor answered the audience members’ concerns and issues on the provisions of RA 10029, most especially on the aim of the law to professionalize the practice of psychology in the country. Dr. Tarroja in her answers emphasized the need to be acquainted with the IRR of the said law and assess the readiness of individuals and schools offering Psychology for the licensure requirements.
Meanwhile, Ms. Sabdilon sees the staging of the said event as part of her department’s continuous effort to make its faculty and students abreast with the recent developments in the teaching and practicing of Psychology in the Philippines.
