The year before had been a productive period for the ADZU PHIL – LiDAR 1 team despite encountering several setbacks due to weather conditions and technical problems with the plane, but this year sees the team in leaps and bounds.
It was to no surprise that the team’s hard work paid off. This is the third time the team is cited for reaching their milestone. Last year the team was praised for “sticking to the deadline and doing the job right”. The team had achieved 100% of its objectives in 2014 and just April of this year the team received special notice. John Dill Macapagal, a Senior Science Research Specialist of the Data Pre-Processing Component at UP in an email said “I, together with our mentors, would like to commend your team for the pace of your data turnover”.
Yesterday, in an email sent by the Chief Science Research Specialist for DREAM Program, Engr. Sarah Jane D. Samalburo to ADZU Project Leader Mario Rodriguez, she commended the team for effectively carrying out their Year 1 targets.
The team had finished processing the data they painstakingly gathered over the course of the year and completed the digitization of features for two floodplains. The acquisition of the rainfall data is 100% accomplished and the production of flood maps and models are done for the areas in Cluster 1, while map production for areas in Cluster 2 is already ongoing.
Engr. Samalburo is in charge of the data processing component of the UP DREAM Program and oversees the Quality Control team which checks and evaluates data submitted by the state universities and other institutions of higher learning that form part of the nationwide LiDAR project that involves the use of LiDAR technology (or Light Detection and Ranging) which aims to produce highly accurate maps to aid in flood awareness and preparedness.
Engr. Samalburo stated that by “exerting extra efforts to ensure the completion of our Data Processing Targets”, the ADZU PHIL – LiDAR 1 distinguished itself by earning a spot as one of the 6 SUCs and HEIs who first accomplished their preliminary outputs for Feature Extraction and whose accomplishments were notably proficient in delivering their targets. Currently there are 15 SUCs and HEIs nationwide who participated in the DOST DREAM project.
Project Leader Mario Rodriguez heads the ADZU Phil-LiDAR 1 team which includes Emir Epino (Chief Senior Research Specialist), Rengie Bagares (Senior Research Specialist), and Research Associates Leonor Ycaza, Raymond Ong, Bob Ocquias, Rowald Baluyot, Kevin Nacalaban, and Kay Deles.
The team’s administrative staff includes Yen Delgado as outgoing Project Development Officer and is succeeded by Cherry Gallardo, Julie Lauriaga (Project Development Assistant), and Benson Solaran (Project Staff).
