Student volunteers of the Social Awareness and Community
Service Involvement (SACSI) Office conducted a stay-in Leadership Peace
Conference entitled “Socially Aware Young Leaders (SAYL) Conference: Sailing to
Peace”. This was held on April 10-12, 2015 at the Fr. Eusebio Salvador, SJ
Campus, Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU). The participants were 33 student
leaders from 13 secondary schools in Zamboanga City.

The SAYL Conference, which was composed of peace-integrated
leadership sessions and other activities, was organized and conducted to equip
the participants with skills they could use to perform their duties and
responsibilities as officers of their organization. Special focus was given to
enriching their capacity in protecting the rights of and maintaining peace
among the student body.

The SAYL organizing body headed by Chelsea Jade C. Manogura,
a third year BS Business Administration student, identified the participants as
incoming grade 9 or 10 students who are newly-elected officers of different
clubs or organizations.

Dan Ryan S. Reyes, a third year BS Psychology Student, and
Ms. Cecile B. Simbajonm, Program Coordinator for Peace Education of the Ateneo
Peace Institute (API), teamed up for the first day sessions that tackled
“Awareness on one’s self and leadership style” and
“Understanding personal biases on social issues”.

Daryl D. C. Jimeno, Communications Head of the organizing
body and a third year AB International Studies student, and Joshua B. Pierra

Skills Coordinator of the Mindanao Youth Development Program-Zamboanga Basilan
Integrated Development Alliance (MYDev Program-ZABIDA) and a Youth Solidarity
for Peace (YSP) Member.

After all the lecture presentations, Ateneo Peace Institute
(API) Director, Ms Perla S. Ledesma, and SACSI Director, John Mayo M. Enriquez
facilitated round table discussions about bullying, corruption and the
Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL). These issues were identified by the participants as
the key concerns in their respective schools.

On the first day of the event, Executive Assistant II of the
City Government of Zamboanga, Christian E. Olasiman, and Associate Auditor for
Tax and Audit of ALC Accounting Firm and Tax and Law Instructor in AdZU, Adriel
Earl A. Toribio reunited at 8 PM to give testimonies of their experiences as
student leaders. The participants put together their insights in a planning
session facilitated by the AdZU volunteers. This was followed by a
socialization night on the second day of the event. Team-building activities
were also conducted on the third day to establish camaraderie among the student
leaders.
