Model United Nations Program

The Social Sciences Department of the School of Liberal Arts through its International Studies Student Organization of Ateneo (ISOA), in collaboration with the Association of European Studies Students (AEuSS) of the Ateneo de Manila University will be conducting a Training Seminar on the Model United Nations Program from 28 – 30 May 2012 at the Carlos Dominguez Conference Hall.

The MUN is an academic simulation of the United Nations with the goal of educating its members about topics important to the UN such as matters of international relations, current world events, diplomacy, and the overall agenda. Students assume the position of diplomats from different nations and stage a mock UN conference. The participants prepare by studying a country and its policies and assuming roles as representatives and go through a simulated session and form resolutions to problems the world faces. This provides student participants with a better understanding of the inner working of the UN as they build skills in diplomacy, leadership, communication, and critical thinking. These are skills the students will need in their future careers, especially the Foreign Service.

The AEuSS will oversee and facilitate the entire three-day workshop. This project is an initiative of Miss Pamela Camille A. Barredo, MUN Training project head and ISOA co-moderator, and organized by the Council of ISOA. It will be the first time that this training will be held here in Zamboanga City. The Voice of Mindanao, a youth organization supporting today’s peace-builders and tomorrow’s Mindanao leaders through capacity-building, is a major sponsor.

The seminar will consist of several key aspects and practices of the MUN. The first two days will focus on a lecture on the history of diplomatic practices and the potential roles in conflicts management in Mindanao. It will also cover subject matters such as the history of the United Nations, and the evolution of the Model UN. All of these will result in a culminating activity on the third day in the form of a Mock MUN conference on security disarmament. This event will be open to the public.

We are opening 5 extra slots for non-INTS students. Interested parties may look for Miss Pamela Camille A. Barredo or Ms. Ma. Christina A. Cañones at the SLA Office. You may also contact them at 991 – 0871 loc. 2240. Registration fee is P2,500 (inclusive of lunch, snacks, certificates and training materials).

In February 2012, Claire Gonzales and Maris Tuazon, (incoming 4th year INTS students) participated in the ADMU MUN held at the Ateneo de Manila University. They were trained and accompanied by Miss Barredo.
