Languages Dept Holds Lecture Series on Applied Linguistics

The Languages Department of the School of Liberal Arts in coordination with the Graduate School conducted a lecture-series seminar on Applied Linguistics last October 3, 2009 at the College Audio Visual Room. This lecture is a first of a series which will be organized by the department.
The speakers of the said lecture were Dr. Claribel C. Concepcion, Coordinator of the SLA Graduate Programs, Dr. Aireen L. Barrios, Dean of the School of Liberal Arts, Dr. Minda V. Santos, a professor of the Languages department, Dr. Mary Sheildred D. Angeles, Chair of the Languanges department, and Ms. Precious T. Mazo, staff of Ateneo Peace and Culture Institute. All of the speakers hold post graduate degrees in Linguistic Studies with exception of Ms. Mazo who is currently an MA candidate.
The first lecture delved on Introduction to Linguistics with focus on Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, Semantics, and Pragmatics.
The goal of this lecture series is to increase the awareness and research practices in the field of linguistics in the Zamboanga Peninsula region. Participants of the said lecture were SLA graduate students and educators from the other major universities in the city.

The topics of the next lectures of this series are: Bilingualism and Second Language Acquisition, Sociolinguistics, Discourse Analysis, Psycholinguistics, and Quantitative Tools in Applied Linguistics. A workshop on research proposal presentations will also be held after all the lectures.
