Habemus Papam

14 March 2013

MEMO TO: THE ADZU COMMUNITY

RE: HABEMUS PAPAM

We join the whole Catholic Church in thanking the Lord for the election of Pope Francis (Jorge Mario Cardinal Bergoglio), former Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was born on 17 December 1936.  He entered the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) on 11 March 1958. He was ordained a priest on 13 December 1969.

He was a Novice Master in 1972 and the following year he became the Provincial of the Province of Argentina.  He then became Rector of the Faculty of Philosophy and Theology.  He was a parish priest, confessor and spiritual director until he was ordained a bishop in 1992. He served as the President of the Bishops’ Conference of Argentina.  In the Consistory of 21 February 2001, he was declared a Cardinal by Pope John Paul II.

He is considered to be a humble church leader and theologian with a special love for the poor.  He is known as “a pope of many firsts:” first Jesuit Pope, first Latin American Pope, first to adopt the name “Francis” and so on.

We pray for our Holy Father Pope Francis and for the whole Church.

Deo Gratias!

Antonio F Moreno SJ
