CCES Engages Simariki Island Seaweed Farmers in Sustainable Livelihood Project

In its mission to promote sustainable economic opportunities, the Center for Community Extension Services (CCES), led by Director Loreta, conducted a consultation meeting with seaweed farmers on Simariki Island on February 12, 2025. The meeting aimed to lay the groundwork for an upcoming livelihood project designed to alleviate poverty and enhance economic growth within the Indigenous community.

Held at the Simariki School for Indigenous Peoples, the meeting gathered 25 seaweed farmers and key representatives to discuss the challenges and opportunities within the local seaweed farming industry. Discussions focused on the community’s readiness to adopt the project, addressing obstacles in farming, and identifying strategic interventions for improving productivity and long-term sustainability.

Among the key concerns raised by farmers were limited access to resources, the need for technical training, market linkages, and sustainable farming techniques. CCES acknowledged these challenges and emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to develop a structured approach that would boost the industry and uplift the local economy.

Despite these challenges, the farmers expressed strong support and enthusiasm for the initiative, recognizing its potential to significantly improve their livelihoods. Their positive response reaffirmed the importance of continuous support and capacity-building to ensure the project’s success and sustainability.

Encouraged by the community’s feedback, CCES plans to hold a follow-up meeting to further refine implementation strategies and mobilize additional support from stakeholders. The next steps will focus on securing the necessary training, resources, and market connections to ensure the program’s long-term viability.

Through initiatives like this, CCES remains committed to empowering Indigenous communities by fostering sustainable livelihood opportunities. By supporting seaweed farmers in enhancing their skills and market access, the program aims to create lasting economic benefits for the Simariki Island community.
