Beacon Newsmagazine and Marejada receive citations during the 7th MSPC

The Beacon News Magazine left for Davao last October 21, 2009 but did not fail to come home empty-handed. This time, they bagged the second highest citations in the recently held Lanog 2009, the 7th Mindanao-wide student press convention, at Daliao, Toril, Davao City.

The Beacon, official publication of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University, was awarded second in both the Best Magazine and Best Folio Category. It was a citation granted by the College Editor’s Guild of the Philippines to outstanding publications who have participated in the said event.

Lanog 2009 was a 5-day convention aiming to heighten the awareness and sensitivity of student journalists with the current issues of the country. It also aims to further develop the skills of the participants in their respective fields in journalism. Over all, there were 20 publications from different schools that participated, and representing Beacon were Maria Rosario Legarde, Mark Anthony Cabilo, and Maybellene Joy Muesco.

At the final night of the event, awards were given to three of the most outstanding publications who submitted entries for the Magazine and Folio category. There were five nominees for each category.

For the Best Magazine category, the nominees were the official publications namely: Omniana of Notre Dame of Marbel University; Urian of Father Saturnino Urios University; The Crusader of Xavier Univerity-Ateneo de Cagayan; DMMAxim of Davao Merchants Marine Academia College of Southern Philippines; and the Beacon of Ateneo de Zamboanga University. Having been scrutinized by outstanding journalists, itself, the Crusader was awarded first place followed by the Beacon and Omniana.

On the other hand, the nominees for the Best Folio category were: Sulo of  Cotabato City State Polytechnic College; Tendrils of Notre Dame of Marbel University; Veritas of Xavier University; Layag of DMMA College of Southern Philippines; and Marejada of Atenedo de Zamboanga University. In the end, Veritas bagged first place followed by Marejada and Layag.

But before the night ended, a special citation was given to The Rock, the official publication of San Pedro College, for its broadsheet. It was indeed an event full of learning, fun, and experience. Another event where AdZU had proven its education is not simply limited within the walls of the school. Another honor brought by the Ateneans.

Congratulations, again, to the Beacon News Magazine. Continue in using your pen as a sword. And ignite in your hearts the theme of Lanog’09: Manunulat para sa pagbabago. Sumulat para sa bayan. Ipagtanggol ang kinabukasan.
