Weekly Memorandum No. 2015 – 9.1
TO: AdZUHS Community
FROM: Father Principal
1. Principal’s Message:
A few days ago, while I was cleaning up my room, I got hold of Robert Fulghum’s book “All I Really Need To Know I learned in Kindergarten,” which I first read in 1991. It is an easy-to-read book because it talks about the simple things in life that we usually take for granted. It tells us that wisdom is not at the top of the graduate-school mountain, but there in kindergarten.
Mr. Fulghum enumerates some of the things that were taught then: Share everything. Play fair. Don’t hit people. Put things back where you found them. Clean up your own mess. Don’t take things that aren’t yours. Say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody. Wash your hands before you eat. When you’re outside school or home, watch out for traffic, hold hands, and stick together. . . and so on and so forth. And while leafing through the pages, I was led to a reflection: What a “better” world we would have if we follow and observe basic policies.
There are a lot of things that need to be discussed, but let me cite only three from among the nuggets of wisdom Fulghum shared: put things back where we got them, clean up our own mess, and follow rules. These are simple rules, and they remind us of everyday occurrences in cafeterias, in restaurants, in work places and at home. They remind us also to test one’s real character, our real character, by answering this question: what would I do if I know I would never be found out?”
2. Characteristic of Jesuit Education (CJE): Jesuit education includes a religious dimension that permeates the entire education. Religious and spiritual formation is integral to Jesuit education. It is not added to, or separate from, the educational process. In all classes, in the climate of the school, and most especially in formal classes in religion, every attempt is made to present the possibility of a faith response to God as something truly human and not opposed to reason, and to develop those values which are able to resist the secularism of modern life.

“The Student Activity Program gives emphasis on both academic and non-academic formation that is integral in the formation of the total person. Emphasis on academic formation is worked through the various academic co-curricular activities while non-academic formation through the different activities of clubs and organizations.
“For the entire school year, the student activity program as well as the other offices such as the campus ministry, social action and council of leaders provided alternative avenues where both students and faculty were able to harness and maximize their full potential. Moreover, through the various activities such as the high school night, senior’s recollection, Ateneo promenade, and upcoming senior’s night are sufficient to promote a strong sense of friendship and connectedness among students as a class and as a community as a whole. However, the program believes that a thorough evaluation is needed on the protocol and proceedings on outing and overnight activities.
“As of the moment, for the immediate action on the pressing issue on the permission of overnight and outing activities, the program suggests that class overnight will not be allowed considering the concerns on security, expenses, and preparation for the year-end activities . In lieu of the class overnight, outing activities will be allowed as long as it includes formation activities which will help achieve the school’s vision and mission of forming young men and women who will affect greater society as agents of change.”
Fr. James Martin, SJ
What’s your favorite image of God? Creator? Source of All Being? Father? Mother?
Our images of God naturally influence our relationship with God in prayer. For example, if you think of God as angry or vengeful, it may be difficult to be open and honest in prayer or to feel intimacy with God. In my experience, people sometimes relate to God in the ways they have related to other authority figures in their lives. If your parents or teachers were demanding, you may be inclined to see God as demanding. But this can severely limit our understanding of God because, needless to say, God is not our mother or father. God is always bigger than our experiences, and our imaginations, too.
One all-too-common image is God as the unforgiving judge, ready to pounce on you for the slightest transgression. Yet in the Parable of the Prodigal Son, Jesus present us with a completely different image (Luke 15:11-32). The father welcomes home his wayward son not with condemnation and vengeance but with love and mercy. And for those who have a difficult time imagining God, I always suggest the same thing: Look at Jesus and you will see God.
Over time, our images of God may change, which is also to the good. As the Jesuit Carlos Valles wrote, “If you always imagine God in the same way, no matter how true and beautiful it may be, you will not be able to receive the gift of the new ways God has ready for you.”
James Martin is a Jesuit priest and author of “Between Heaven and Mirth”, “The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything”, an–d “My Life with the Saints”.
