Weekly Memorandum No. 2016 – 6.2
TO: AdZUHS Community
FROM: Father Principal
1.
Principal’s Message:A new school year presents opportunities for various beginnings—new classes, new faces, sometimes new subjects/courses, and often new materials. Newness alone, however, cannot produce transformation. We ourselves must be willing to be caught up in the rebirth that is possible with each new year.
Starting a new academic year gives us the opportunity to make new plans, design new strategies, and implement new ideas. There is a special kind of joy and satisfaction in planning lessons and activities for a new class; for although the subject or grade level is the same, the students are new, and they appreciate the planning that is done for them. Whether one’s responsibility is supervising, teaching, maintaining a building, or managing an office, there is always room for improvement and for new ways to do a good job even better.
We can be proud of what we achieve in the Ateneo—in our classrooms, in our offices—but our achievements are not due to complacency and satisfaction with the status quo. Our program is what it is because a staff of dedicated, aspiring men and women have a common goal—to do what is best for students—and are always looking for ways to achieve that goal.
This year, as in the past, we must concentrate on the processes that spur continuing advancement: evaluating what we have, determining what we can do to improve, and identifying what we need to make those improvements.
2. Characteristics of Jesuit Education (CJE): Jesuit education encourages a realistic knowledge, love, and acceptance of self.
While emphasizing the happiness in life resulting from a responsible use of freedom, Jesuit education recognizes the reality of sin and the consequent obstacles to freedom. Students are encouraged to discern and remove such obstacles to growth through an examination of personal prejudice and an evaluation of relative goods and competing values. They are helped to reflect on their own personal experiences, accept their own gifts, accept their own limitations and overcome these as far as possible.
3. PROTOCOL ON SUSPENSION OF CLASSES DUE TO BAD WEATHER (issued by the University President’s office on 02 July 2015)
a. Please monitor announcements, especially those coming from the City Mayor, made on reputable local radio stations like ABSCBN, Dateline Zamboanga, Emedia, and RMN. The City Mayor is authorized to suspend classes, and we are expected to follow. If the City Mayor’s office makes an announcement of suspension of classes, we will automatically suspend classes accordingly.
b. When the decision calls for the discretion of school heads, AdZU shall disseminate the decision of the University President immediately through the following:
i. Official text message (“ADZU ADVISORY”) from the President and the University Communications Officer;
ii. Our official AdZU Facebook account;
iii. Radio stations;
iv. AdZU webpage and community email;
v. AdZU telephone operator and/or guard (outside office hours); and
vi. Members of the Presidential Management Team, which include the AVP, Grade School
and High School Principals, who will disseminate the information through their unit text brigades, which will reach students and parents as soon as possible.
c. If classes are not suspended, and if conditions are difficult for students to go to school due to flooding and strong rains in their respective areas, we encourage everyone to exercise discretion and make appropriate decisions for their safety. The academic units will ensure that consideration on attendance and tardiness be given.
