ADZU to launch the Subanon Cultural Awareness Program

The Ateneo de Zamboanga University, through its Ateneo Peace and Culture Institute (APICI) and The Gallery of the Peninsula and the Archipelago (GPA), will host the Launching of the Subanon Cultural Awareness Program today, September 10, 2009, at 2:00 PM at the Carlos Dominguez Conference Hall, LRC Building Ateneo de Zamboanga University.

The Cultural Awareness Program seeks to promote cultural awareness for solidarity, better understanding and deeper appreciation of the different ethnolinguistic groups of Western Mindanao.

The activity is one of Ateneo’s contributions to the promotion of the integration of local history and culture into the regular instruction curriculum in Western Mindanao schools, colleges, and universities. This long-term work is, in turn, part of the greater efforts to promote peace through better inter-cultural understanding and appreciation.

There will be a three-part program in this activity; the first part will be a public talk about the Subanons which will be delivered by Ms Janie Grace H Hapalla, an acknowledged local expert on subanon culture, followed by a presentation of traditional attire and cultural performances by a group of Subanons from Limpapa community and the last part will be the opening of the Subanon exhibit at the gallery.

The exhibit will run from September 10 to 30, 2009.
