AdZU SHS Personnel Take on Mental Health at ZAMBASULTAPS Gen Ass ’24

Ateneo de Zamboanga University Senior High School personnel namely Diane S Candido, Jeniffer Violet A Cabiles, and Elijah Marvin S Guangco attended the ZAMBASULTAPS General Assembly 2024, held on August 7, 2024, in Astoria Plaza, Zamboanga City. It brought together administrators from various levels and schools to discuss the critical issue of mental health. The event, which featured a lineup of impressive speakers, including Dr. Mary Jane A. Galang, aimed to raise awareness and provide practical strategies for addressing mental health challenges faced by students.

The assembly delved into specific mental health challenges faced by students, including mood disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity dis*rder (ADHD), and non-su*cidal self-inj*ry (NSSI). Speakers provided insights into the causes of these issues and the importance of seeking professional help when needed. The event also discussed the role of self-care and social support in managing mental health concerns.

A significant focus of the assembly was on instilling hope and promoting recovery. Participants learned that recovery does not necessarily mean the absence of a disorder but rather the development of coping skills. The event emphasized the importance of supportive language and reinforcement in empowering students to manage their challenges effectively.

In addition to this, Dr Ruth L Fuentes from the Department of Education (DepEd) – Region IX gave updates on the Matatag Curriculum and other DepEd Programs, while Dr Jose Vicente Regalado from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) – Region IX and Watchel Basilio representing UniFAST present various CHED Programs that students may apply for. This was followed by Dr Omarkhayyam I Dalagan from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) – Region IX who also presented different TESDA Programs along with the current trends in skills development.

The insights gained from the ZAMBASULTAPS General Assembly 2024 are highly relevant for the Ateneo de Zamboanga University Senior High School Unit. The event has inspired the development of mental health programs and support systems within the school, with plans to share the knowledge gained with colleagues to foster a more supportive environment for students. By prioritizing mental health awareness and advocacy, the school aims to contribute to the overall well-being and success of its students.
