Last September 26, Monday, the Tripod Unlimited Training Development, Inc. conducted a two-day Campus Journalism seminar-workshop at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University, William H. Kreutz campus with the theme “Youth Journalism: Catalyst for Tomorrow’s Engaged Citizen”. High school students from Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Pillar College, Claret High School, Western Mindanao State University, AB Simpson Alliance School, and Zion School participated in the training. The seminar workshop aimed to promote the essence of being part of the mass media and to orient the participants on the different ethics and values in journalism.

The English Department Chairperson of the ADZU HS, Ms. Evelyn Q. Bugayong, started the seminar with a welcome address. Administrative officer Al Rahimin Teo Kenoh, delivered a youth talk, classifying the young journalists the ‘hope of tomorrow’. City councillor Mr. Vincent Paul Elago (who represented the mayor), delivered the keynote address and advocated developmental journalism. He stressed that aspiring journalists should use their writing skills to bring Zamboanga to a “greater and better tomorrow.”

The series of lectures began after moderators from the ADZU HS English and Filipino publications, Mr. Marion B. Guerrero and Mr. Francis Rodolfo M. Marcial, Jr., respectively, shared their knowledge, experience and views on the basics of journalism. The participants were then grouped according to their fields of specialization, and each group was provided assigned speakers: Vic Larato (News and Sports), Christian Olasiman (Features), Edgar Banos (Editorial/Opinion), Sandra Jamiro (Photojournalism), Cedraick Zabala (Layouting), and Jan Meryl Luna(Cartooning).

Speakers Rosemarie T. Napao, Rosie Roquero, and Barbara E. Barrios imparted their knowledge on the basics of technological journalism, from new media blogging to online advertising.

Ruth R. Guerrero, coordinator of the ADZU HS Student Activity and Social Programs office provided the closing remarks for the two-day journalism training. This was immediately followed with the distribution of certificates for all participants. The seminar-workshop was organized by the Tripod Unlimited Training Development, Inc. and the moderators of the English and Filipino publications of the ADZU HS.
