AdZU high school opens new school year with Independence Day theme

The Ateneo de Zamboanga University High School welcomed the academic year on June 10 with a short program commemorating the 115th Independence Day.

This year’s celebration is anchored on the theme, “Independence 2013: Pitching in Towards Inclusive Growth.” This serves as a reminder that the nation’s development is the concern of everyone and that a collaborative effort is needed for the achievement of inclusive yet sustainable growth. As quoted by the master of ceremonies, Mr. Armand H. Lee, “Every Filipino, regardless of the cultural identity or even age has a role to play in the nation’s development and that this hard-earned independence comes with a great responsibility to build a nation founded on truth and justice.”

The program started with a contemporary dance presentation of Francis Magalona’s song entitled Watawat rendered by the PUNLAAN –the official theatre club of the Ateneo High School. It was followed by a short talk by Mr. Espiridion D. Atilano Jr., the acting chairperson of the Social Studies Department about the history of the country’s independence and some facts about the meaning of the flag, hence, enabled the students to better understand the significance of the celebration. The highlight of the program is the Flag Puzzle Activity participated by student representatives of the different classes in all year levels. Mr. Carlito A. Robin, President of the Faculty and Staff Club and Ms. Rosie M. Hong, the Assistant Principal represented the faculty and staff in the said activity.

Towards the end of the celebration, three trivia questions were asked to the students with corresponding prizes. In closing, a community singing of the song Pananagutan was led by the Coro Concordia de Aguilas participated by the entire AdZU High School.
