ADZU Celebrates the Lami-Lamihan: A Public Talk and Exhibit on the History and Culture of the Yakan

In line with the celebration of the National Arts Month 2011, the Ateneo de Zamboanga University, through its Ateneo Peace and Culture Institute (APCI) and the Gallery of Peninsula and the Archipelago, will host the Lami-Lamihan: A Public Talk and Exhibit on the History and Culture of the Yakan on February 3, 2011, 1:30 in the afternoon at the Campion Lecture Hall, 2/F BC Building, Ateneo de Zamboanga University.

This event is part of the Cultural Awareness Program of the APCI that seeks to promote cultural consciousness for solidarity, better understanding and deeper appreciation of the different ethnolinguistic groups of Western Mindanao.

The activity is one of Ateneo’s contributions to the promotion of the integration of local history and culture into the regular instruction curriculum in Western Mindanao schools, colleges and universities.   This long-term work is, in turn, part of the greater efforts to promote peace through better inter-cultural understanding and appreciation.

There will be a two-part program in this activity.  The first part will be a public talk about the Yakan which will be delivered by Mrs. Victoria M Siason, a Hall of Fame Awardee of the National Music Competition for Young Artists-Traditional Music Category; Mr. Earl Francis C Pasilan, a member of the Board of Directors of Jambangan Dance Company and a known propagator of the Yakan Culture; and Dr Robert V. Panaguiton, an associate professor and faculty of the Social Science Department of the School of Liberal Arts-ADZU.  There will also be cultural performances by Mr Uwang Ahadas, a National Living Treasure and GAMABA Awardee, and The Lamitan Yakan Family Ensemble.

The second part of the activity will be the Yakan Exhibit.  The exhibit will showcase old and recent Yakan photos, artifacts and crafts, traditional costumes and audio-video documentary materials.  It will also feature a demonstration of cloth weaving.  The exhibit will run from February 3 to 28, 2011.
