Simariki Island Community Assembly Approves Resolution for School Site

On February 12, 2025, the Ateneo de Zamboanga University – Center for Community Extension Services, in collaboration with the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples IX represented by Atty. Gibran Abubakar and Mr. Winnie, convened a significant assembly to seek approval on a resolution concerning the establishment of a school site within their Ancestral Domain. This event marks a crucial step in addressing the educational needs of the Sama Bangingi indigenous cultural community residing on the island.

The assembly brought together community leaders, elders, parents, farmers, fisherfolks, and youth, all of whom recognized the urgent need for a dedicated learning institution within Simariki Island. The lack of an accessible educational facility has long posed a challenge for the community. By approving the resolution, the residents have taken a decisive stand in securing a brighter future for their children.

Atty. Abubakar from NCIP IX played an instrumental role in facilitating the discussions and ensuring that the decision-making process adhered to the principles of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC), a cornerstone of Indigenous rights. Their presence underscored the government’s commitment to upholding the rights and welfare of indigenous peoples, particularly in the realm of education and land use.

During the assembly, community members voiced their aspirations and concerns, emphasizing the need for sustainable development that aligns with their cultural heritage and traditions. The resolution’s approval signifies a unified commitment to fostering an environment where indigenous knowledge and modern education can coexist harmoniously.

Moving forward, the AdZU-CCES and NCIP IX will collaborate with the Department of Education to formalize the turnover of Simariki School for Indigenous People. The next steps include securing legal documentation which is necessary to support quality education on the island.

The approval of the resolution is a landmark achievement for the Simariki Island community, setting a precedent for other indigenous communities seeking to assert their right to education and self-determination. It is a testament to the power of collective action and the unwavering spirit of the Simariki people in shaping a better future for generations to come.
