Spam is flooding the Internet with unsolicited and often repetitive messages, in an attempt to force these messages on people who would not otherwise choose to receive them. Spam is mostly commercial advertising, often for suspicious products, get-rich-quick schemes, or quasi-legal services. Spammers often generate their e-mails Spam lists by scanning Internet postings, stealing Internet mailing lists, or searching the Web for addresses. Although not directly felt, the cost of Spam is transmitted directly to the Internet users.
While we are in the continuing process of securing and protecting our ADZU network, all Central users should help fight off this problem.
Below are some tips to avoid further growth of SPAM e-mails.
- Consider wisely who you give your e-mail address to. Signing up to receive mail, even from legitimate sites such as Consumer Reports or Wells-Fargo, can result in unwanted spam.
- When you register with a web site which requires your e-mail address, read the registration screen carefully. Often, sites will automatically enable options which will send you advertisements or information. Disable these options to decrease the amount of spam mail you will receive.
- If you receive unsolicited mail, DO NOT attempt to unsubscribe. This can actually increase spam.
- If you are receiving spam which always has the same subject or sender, you can create a filter in Pegasus Mail to discard mail SPAM before it reaches your Inbox.
To prevent virus from getting into your computer, the following must also be observed:
* Never open or immediately delete e-mails from unknown senders.
* Always scan attachments before saving them into the local directories.
